A few weeks ago I booked a cruise on Carnival Glory for my 10th anniversary. I’m hoping they can get the ship repaired before our sailing. It took some damage when it made contact with Carnival Legend when it was docking in Cozumel a couple of days ago. From the pictures I’ve seen in the news and comparing those with the deck plans, it looks like the back corner of the Platinum Dining room was wrecked. It’s possible that the cabins on the Main Deck underneath were affected as well. Carnival has announced that Carnival Glory will depart some hours later than planned for its next trip. I can’t imagine that will be enough time to completely repair the ship, and they’ll complete the repairs over the next couple of sailings.
The last report I read indicated that six people suffered minor injuries. I hope they recover quickly and aren’t too traumatized by the experience. They’ll all have quite a story to tell, I’m sure.
It’s uncommon for cruise ships to bump into each other. I did a bit of research and only found a handful of incidents that occurred over many years. Most of them seem to have been caused by either wind or equipment failure. Cruise ships are enormous and strong winds hitting them on the side can be enough to overwhelm the power of their maneuvering thrusters. I imagine it’s a little like driving a big truck or bus in high winds. Heading directly into or with the wind isn’t so bad, but gusts of wind from the side can make it challenging to control the vehicle.
